How to play hilly lies
Because the World of Golf London golf range is built of concrete and thankfully is flat, the shots we can’t practice here include hilly and hanging lies. So, I’d like to give you some tips now on how to play these shots when you encounter them on the golf course.
Uphill is the easier one. When playing uphill, the ball will naturally rise for you. In fact, by rising so well, you will lose distance. So, when going up a hill, go down the numbers of your clubs. For example, if on flat ground the distance of your shot would require a 7 iron, take a 6 iron for the uphill lie. Whether you are left or right-handed, remember to position the ball nearer your higher foot. Finally, get your shoulders and hips parallel to the hill, this will mean pulling your trailing shoulder and hip down to achieve this.
Downhill lies require a similar process. Get your shoulders and hips parallel to the hill and position the ball nearer to the higher foot. In this instance the ball will rise less, travel flatter and further. This means that when going down the hill you go up the number of the golf club For example, if the distance on flat ground required a 7 iron, this time take an 8 iron for the downhill lie.
Hope that helps when you are next out on the hilly courses.
